Wrestling Builds Self Confidence!

Many children today struggle to build the self-confidence that is required to grow as an adolescent into adulthood.

The sport of wrestling is the quickest way to build confidence that translates immediately into the classroom, at home and in life.

Wrestling Teaches Accountability!

Wrestling is a match between you and your opponent and no one else.  Thus this teaches and stresses the idea of extreme accountability.  Wrestlers learn that they cannot make excuses, they cannot take short cuts and they cannot take credit for others success.

Wrestling Teaches Self-Defense!

Involvement in wrestling is a great way to build confidence and the ability to defend one’s self, without resorting to the violent tactics inherent in most other forms of self-defense. Wrestling skills are an enormous asset in a schoolyard or even a street fight, however, wrestling’s non-violent nature does not prepare one for other aspects of self-defense such as disabling or disarming an assailant.

Wrestling Teaches Goal Setting and Determination!

Wrestling allows each individual athlete to set achievable goals and grow and establish a growth mindset.  Because of the unique nature of the sport and its individual aspect, wrestlers can witness rapid growth in their skills with hard word.

So let’s explore what exactly is wrestling on the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

REAL Wrestling (or Amateur Wrestling) is not the same as the WWE or Professional Wrestling that you may see on TV and synonymous with names like Hulk Hogan, The Rock and John Cena.

Amateur wrestling is a highly regulated and controlled combat sport with a strong emphasis on safety.

Is Wrestling Safe?

Wrestling is ACTUALLY one of the safer sports that a child can compete in.  Wrestling has fewer serious injuries than football, basketball or ice hockey.  In competition, there is at least 1 mat official to just 2 competitors at a time.  Compare that to a sport like Soccer where there are only 1-2 officials for 20+ competitors at a time.  There is much more coverage in wrestling in order to prevent injury.

There are no high speed collisions in wrestling, reducing the risk of high impact concussions that you would see in a sport like football.

Because of the “weight class” system, smaller competitors are grouped with other competitors of their size, further reducing the risk of a larger competitor injuring a smaller one as can happen in sports like Basketball, Lacrosse & Soccer.

Do Wrestlers have to ‘LOSE’ Weight?

This is a common misconception.  Wrestling competitions are divided into Weight Classes in order to prevent injury and level the playing field.  Wrestlers are encouraged to eat a healthy diet but not to “LOSE” Weight.  In fact, wrestlers are encouraged to strength train which can lead to “GAINING” Muscle weight.  With a healthy diet and good conditioning and strength training, a wrestler will naturally be at their ideal weight for competition in ANY sport and in life!

Are specific body types better for wrestling?

The greatest part about wrestling is that anyone can succeed no matter their size or athletic ability.  Wrestlers can succeed if they develop a strong work ethic and commit themselves to learning and competing every day.
